India vs Australia, 2nd ODI: Another masterpiece during chase as Virat Kohli scores 39th ODI ton

Virat Kohli scored his 39th One-Day International (ODI) hundred during the second ODI between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday. 

During India's chase of 299, Kohli came out to bat at 47 for 1 after the dismissal of opener Shikhar Dhawan for 32. 

Kohli scored his century in 108 balls and his knock so far is inclusive of five fours and two sixes. 

The Indian skipper, who scored his fifth ton in Australia and overall sixth against these opponents, now is the 11th highest run-getter in ODI cricket (10,334*). 

Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma struck a 52-ball 43 and his knock of 43 included two fours and two sixes that earned him a special record across formats against an individual team. 

No player so far has hit more sixes against an opponent than Rohit across formats. He now has 89 sixes against Australia across formats, one more than Chris Gayle, who has struck 88 sixes against England.

It needed a special effort on Tuesday to dismiss Rohit and that came from Peter Handscomb. In the 16th over, bowled by Marcus Stoinis, Rohit went after a short ball but unfortunately, the centurion from the previous match mistimed the pull to be caught by Handscomb in the deep. 

Due to the excessive heat in Australia, when Handscomb ran for the catch he had a direct contact with the sun which could have resulted in Handscomb spilling it. However, the fielder made no mistake as he successfully completed the catch at the deep mid-wicket and broke into a charged up celebration. 

Earlier, Shaun Marsh smashed his seventh hundred before India pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced a brilliant spell in the death overs to limit Australia to 298-9 in the second ODI. 

At the Adelaide Oval, Marsh arrived at the crease at 26-2 and scored 131 runs, including 11 fours and three sixes, and added 94 runs off 65 balls with Glenn Maxwell (48 off 37 balls).
